Earning a college degree has never been easier as it is today, thanks to technological advancement. Unlike in the past, it is not a must to attend in-person classes. Rather, you can access online classes anywhere and anytime, provided you have a digital device and access to the internet.

The coronavirus crisis has made us change the way we do things, mainly how we access education. One of the changes that have been significantly accelerated is the shift towards digital learning. As schools and colleges closed worldwide to curtail the spread of COVID-19, learners have been forced to adopt digital learning as the best alternative for ensuring continuous learning.

Digital learning is convenient for most learners in higher education, especially those with other life commitments. It gives people the flexibility to balance their education, work and family duties. This mode of learning is especially essential for the African Diaspora pursuing their education alongside work commitments. Also, you can earn a top degree from a university of choice, which might have otherwise been difficult were you to attend it in a traditional classroom setting.

However, digital learning can be quite challenging if you are unprepared. But if you plan and follow effective learning strategies, you will find digital learning an excellent mode of studying. Here are some of the tips that you should follow to get the best from your online classes.

1 - Treat digital leaning like in-person learning.

If you want to succeed in digital learning, then treat the experience as an in-person class. “Show up” at your learning space and be disciplined and organised. Just as you wouldn’t play a video game or watch a television show during an in-person class, don't do it at home during your online class.

2 - Practice time management

Since digital learning offers great flexibility, you need excellent time management skills to plan your online classes well. Go through the syllabus and schedule the time to spend on every task. Proper time management helps you avoid procrastination and boosts your performance in assignments and examinations.

3 - Establish a regular study space

Having a regular learning space helps you establish a routine for your studies and improves your productivity. You need a study space that is quiet, comfortable and has all the accessories you need for your learning.

4 - Eliminate distractions

One of the challenges you face while studying at home is many distractions, such as social media, TV shows, games, or noisy family members. You may need to turn off your smartphone to avoid distraction from incoming messages or install web blockers on your computer.

5 - Participate in online discussions

It would be best to collaborate with other students by participating in online discussions and asking questions. Virtual study groups are essential resources when handling assignments and adequately preparing for examinations.
