5 Techniques To Perfect Problem-Solving Skills

5 Techniques To Perfect Problem-Solving Skills

1. Develop a step-by-step procedure

Psychologists recommend a problem-solving cycle that simplifies the process and makes it effective. It involves identifying and defining the problem at hand and breaking it into small manageable steps. You may have several issues at a go, and failure to diagnose the specific problem may lead to poor decision-making. Also, identify the root cause of the problem and explore all the aspects regarding it. Ask yourself what, why, how, when, and where the problem, as these questions guide you in developing a solution.

2. Brainstorm solutions

After equipping yourself with all the relevant information regarding the problem, list all the possible solutions – even if they seem ridiculous. Brainstorming multiple solutions increases your creativity in making decisions to solve the problem. Do not ridicule yourself for coming up with seemingly "stupid solutions" as they may turn out to be viable. After all, no idea is a bad idea. Narrow down your options and choose the most suitable one, implement it, and monitor the progress.

3. Focus on the solution, not the problem

If you want to become an effective problem-solver, normalise focusing on the solution rather than the problem. Neuroscientists posit that when you pay much attention to the problem, you feed your brain with toxic negativity, consequently activating negative emotions and blocking potential solutions. Remain calm after identifying the problem, acknowledge it as an opportunity to grow, and focus your mindset on the possible solutions.

"Success is not the absence of problems, but the ability to solve them with resilience and determination." - Maya Angelou

4. Work with your hands.

Research shows that playing games such as Rubik’s Cube, Chess, or Sudoku wires our minds to problem-solving. You may also play board games with friends or family. When we play games, we challenge our brains to become creative and view problems from different angles and brainstorm solutions.  Furthermore, games prepare our minds not to see problems as burdensome and frustrating; instead, we become excited about solving them.

5. Ask for help.

Collaboration is a vital technique for solving problems effectively. It is most likely that you are not the first person to encounter that problem. Other people within your networks might have experienced and solved similar problems. On this note, the importance of networking and socializing cannot be overstated. Connect with other African diaspora and utilize their expertise and ideas in solving your problems. Asking for help doesn't just bring fresh ideas but also saves you precious time to focus on other essential matters and increase your productivity.

The bottom line

Problem-solving skills are vital in our lives, and perfecting them makes us successful in all our endeavours. Successful entrepreneurs, employees, and leaders perfect their problem-solving skills by embracing techniques that increase effectiveness.
